Part One: Yanmar Engine Starting Problems

The Panel Works but the Starter Does Nothing

Part Two: Yanmar Marine Engine Overheating

A Yanmar marine engine overheating can damage the cylinder head, head gasket, pistons, lubrication and exhaust components.

Reduce power and stop the engine as soon as it is safe. Never open the coolant cap while the system is hot.

Confirm That the Engine Is Actually Overheating

Do not dismiss the alarm as a faulty sensor. Equally, do not replace every cooling component without verifying the temperature.

A technician may compare the engine sensor reading with measurements taken at specified external locations.

Infrared measurements are affected by surface material and emissivity. Use them as comparative evidence, not as the sole reason to ignore an alarm.

Is Seawater Leaving with the Exhaust?

This is the first major cooling-system question.

Little or no seawater discharge

Inspect the raw-water circuit in flow order:

  1. Through-hull intake
  2. Seacock
  3. Raw-water strainer
  4. Intake hose
  5. Seawater pump
  6. Impeller
  7. Heat exchanger and coolers

Check the seacock and strainer

Confirm that the seacock is fully open. Close it before removing the strainer lid.

Reopen the seacock after reassembly and inspect for leakage.

Inspect the seawater-pump impeller

A damaged Yanmar seawater pump impeller may have cracked, distorted or missing blades.

If material is missing, locate it. Fragments can move into a cooler or heat exchanger and continue restricting flow after a new impeller is installed.

Look for hose collapse

An old intake hose may appear normal while the engine is stopped but collapse under pump suction at higher RPM.

Seawater Is Visible but Temperature Still Rises

Visible water does not prove that the flow volume is sufficient.

Compare it with the normal baseline and inspect:

Overheating after coolant service

Follow the model-specific filling and venting procedure. Never open bleed points on a hot, pressurised engine.

Restricted heat exchanger

A Yanmar heat exchanger restriction may still permit some water flow. Scale, corrosion or impeller fragments can reduce cooling capacity enough for the engine to overheat only at higher loads.

Restricted exhaust mixing elbow

A Yanmar exhaust mixing elbow can become internally restricted by carbon, salt and corrosion.

An experienced diagnostic process does not automatically replace the thermostat next. It asks whether blades were missing from the old impeller, whether the intake hose collapses at higher pump suction and whether the engine is correctly loaded.

Again, this is a representative example rather than a specific customer case.

Smoke colour provides direction, not certainty.
